Greg Miller's Freedom Riders The month of June will feature East End artists exhibiting different forms of surfing art in the Quogue Library Art Gallery in "Surf's Up," surfing as art in various media. An opening reception with slide show and lecture will be held Saturday, June 11, from 3 to 4:30 PM. Fine art photographer and Sag Harbor resident Blair Seagram uses a panoramic technique that started with landscapes and cityscapes and in 2008 began to focus on surfers. According to the artist, "The surfing panoramas present a sequential timeline, recognizable to the viewer as one synchronous whole." Lutha Leahy-Miller, from East Quogue, will display Japanese ink drawings of surfers. Leahy-Miller has lived, worked, studied, and surfed in Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, California, France, and the East End. "I try to express the speed and flow of surfing in my artwork as best I am able via graphic, hand-drawn images laden with intense color." Greg Miller creates one-of-a-kind, hand-painted and collaged works rendered on vintage, recycled surfboards. Inspired by iconic Pop Art imagery of the 1960s and '70s, Miller's work is featured in many private collections, as well as Sag Harbor's "Surfari Crossroads" art gallery. The artist believes that the recycling of retired boards gives new life and a new story to boards "infused with the energies and passions of their riders." In these artworks, "The surfboard becomes canvas, palimpsest and metaphor, evoking a distinct energy and flow." Born in California and an avid surfer, Miller recently moved to East Hampton. Kurt Rist grew up surfing in Southampton and began chasing big waves in the winter months, traveling to such places as Ireland, Mexico, Hawaii and California. He runs his own surf school, Hamptons Surf Co., in the summer. Rist will give a talk about surfing accompanied by a slide show on June 11 at the Library. Lulie Morrisey and Doreen Ceglia are chairs of this show, which will be on view through June 28.
